The second meeting of the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (IPHRC-OIC) will be hosted by Turkey in Ankara on 27-31 August 2012.
The meeting will be opened by Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, H.E. Mr. Ahmet Davutoğlu and the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation H.E. Mr. Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu. It is envisaged that issues such as the developments in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories, the developments in Syria and Mali, the conditions of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and fight against religious intolerance, women’s rights, the rights of the children and right to development will be on the agenda of the meeting.
The Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation was established in 2011 in accordance with the decision taken at the 36th meeting of OIC Foreign Ministers which was held in Damascus in 2009. The objective of the Commission which comprises 18 members elected from the member countries of the OIC for three years is as follows: to contribute to the development of human rights in Islamic countries and reinforcing the respect towards the Islamic culture and values worldwide; to encourage the dialogue amongst civilizations in line with the principles and objectives specified in the Charter of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and to provide support for steps to be taken by the member countries for the improvement of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights.
IPHRC-OIC, which is designed to make contributions to the development and reinforcement of human rights in the member countries, constitutes an important instrument of the reform process initiated with the aim of adapting the Organization to the changing conditions and challenges of today.
Turkey has been providing strong support for the activities of the IPHRC-OIC, which is expected to increase the visibility and efficiency of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and to make crucial contributions to member countries in their fields of activity, since its establishment.
